Castle Combe Race Circuit hosted the opening round of the 2019 British Sprint Championship, for those of you who haven’t driven there before the circuit is fast, challenging and rewards the brave driver.
As a sprint round, 1.75 laps is completed as a timed run with the British contenders using the events timed runs to qualify for the Top12 run off, where the fastest 12 British Sprint Entrants take 2 further runs to battle it out for Championship points.
We were delighted to see that an amazing 7 out of the 12 were using PTT Competition Clutches, including the outright winner Steve Broughton in the SBD Dallara.
Well done to everyone involved.
As a note to all of our customers, we would love to hear how your weekends competition has gone, so please feel free to send us details and photos.
David Harvey recently contacted us for a replacement Clutch Cover for his 7.25″ Super Clutch.
On establishing what car the Clutch was being used in, the Torque being produced by the Super Charged K Series engine, the weight of the car with its driver as we do with all of our clients. It became apparent that an 800kg Lotus 340R with a Quaife Sequential Gearbox was indeed some weapon.
David races the car in the European Lotus Cup with backing from Harvey Lintels and I’ve got to say, I wouldn’t mind 10 laps around Spa in the car. She looks like a proper thing!
Best of luck to David and team for 2019.
The decision to update the 1965 Ford Mustang star of Gymkhana 7 was a bold one, but for the Team to take on the legendary Pike Peaks hill climb for a new feature video meant that the car needed a huge jump forwards in performance, a pair of Turbos were strapped to the 410 cubic inch V8 engine to produce 1400hp/1250lbft on Methanol driven through a Sadev 4WD system.
It was clear that a high performance, premium quality clutch would be required and PTT were called in to help, a custom specification 7.25″ Multi-disc unit was built which successfully drove Ken Block to the top of the mountain, and although the whole project is based around creating a show with lots of smoke and drama, there is absolutely no denying how much abuse the cars drivetrain went through to create the exciting video that has been viewed countless times already.
Another PTT Clutch proving just what can be achieved in an extreme application, one that many other manufacturers would back away from, or opt for a larger and heavier clutch but when the product is well designed and expertly machined with such exacting standards as the PTT clutch is, we can push our clutch kits further than most.
Contact us with your requirements, we would love to be involved in your next project.
And for anyone who loves smoke, noise and drama enjoy Ken Blocks video in this link.

Mark Holmes, Holmes Auto Engineering Metro 6R4
When Mark phoned us requiring a set of 7.25″ 0.250″ replacement plates for his 6R4 the ‘bobble hatter’ in me took over to discuss one of my favourite ever creations. Unfortunately most are tucked away now in private collections due to the value of these cars a long with other iconic rally cars of times gone by.
This however is not one of those hidden away and can regularly been seen competing on events such as the Promenade stages. The car features a 2.5 Screamer spec engine so she very, very much makes all the right noises as a quick google search will show. Marks passion for keeping the car in competition was great to hear and that his PTT Clutch has only needed a set of plates after 3 years of competition was also a testament not only to how the car is driven and prepared, but also to the quality of the Friction Material used in all of the PTT Plates.
Wow, what an event!
With such a huge array of rare, interesting and beautifully prepared race cars we saw this as a perfect opportunity to have a “working day out” and attend the “Classic”, and with the majority of drivers competing in the FIA Masters it seemed an ideal time to introduce ourselves to as many potential customers as possible, but also (something which is important to us) to assure existing Super Clutch customers that we are now available to support their needs, whether this be in the form of service and spares or complete replacement units.
Super Clutch has been a hugely popular product in the Historic market for many years, we at SF Technic will continue to support this area of Motorsport and hope to not only build on existing relationships but also forge new ones.
It was great to be walking through the pits and speaking with the owners and drivers, to understand their requirements in more detail and simply be involved in their Motorsport.
We handed out a number of leaflets during the day and would love to hear from anyone who picked one up.
As racers ourselves, we understand that fast and reliable service is vital and as such we strive to keep our lead times short and our customer service/support impeccable.
We are looking forward to the next event at which we can provide an SF Technic and PTT representation and meet even more customers.
Sunday would see several of our customers competing at the Ravens Rock Rally in Ireland, this is a Tarmac rally held on some of Irelands most challenging roads which always provides an exciting format thus attracting a good field of competitors.
One of our Brand Specialists, Meirion Evans from Wales Motorsport Fabrication took his modern spec Mk2 Escort, seeded No. 17 but was soon setting fast stage times and was able to run 5th for the majority of the rally until a small technical issue forced a retirement, but we are sure the Wales Motorsport Team will be back to battle in Ireland soon.
Mark Straker in his recently updated Darrian T90 GTR had received a well earned seeding of car 5, this would certainly help the Darrian crew from getting caught up in traffic on stage and allow them to show the full speed of the 1.6L Ecoboost powered Darrian. We utilise a High Ratio Pressure plate for this car to ensure the clutch has no problem handling the torque output of this very modern turbo engine, while maintaining a light pedal operation, something which our clutches have become synonymous for. While pushing early on stage 2, Mark got caught out on a bumpy section of road causing damage to the car forcing a retirement, we will have to wait for the next event to really see the potential of this new spec car and crew.
If you were competing at Ravens Rock, or anywhere over the weekend and are a customer of ours we would love to hear from you and share your results.
April 22nd saw the first closed road rally in England, made possible due to legislation changes allowing the MSA to authorise this event.
Mark Straker and Michael Coady had planned to use the Essex rally as the first high profile shake down for the newly revised Darrian GTR boasting a 1.6L Ecoboost Ford Engine after a 24month build.
The punchy Turbo Charged engine running under UK rules means it must run a 34mm restrictor, to make the powerplant competitive it is critical to optimise the torque output, SBD Motorsport were more than confident to supply one of our Rally Spec .250″ Twin Disc 7.25″ Clutches for the task.
Mark and Michael achieved a fantastic result, finishing 4th overall and 1st in class along with fastest 2WD car, only being beaten on the road by WRC cars.
We look forward to seeing more from the Darrian throughout the year, good luck guys.
Trevor Willis will be looking to start his 2018 Championship in fine style proudly carrying the No. “1” as reining British Hillclimb Champion.
Over the winter we were happy to supply a replacement set of clutch discs for his 5.5″ Triple setup, no other components were required.
Amazingly Trevor makes a set of discs last around 3 seasons in BHC!
We wish him the very best of luck and are optimistic that he can win a 3rd British title using our clutch.
The World Renowned Norris Designs Mitsubishi EVO really is a mega piece of kit and certainly worth looking around if you ever get the chance, Norris has not only developed their SWB chassis over the years but also the very impressive Twin Charge Engine package.
Their cars hold many records from 1/4 mile drag racing to circuit racing and we are proud to say that our clutch has been along for the journey.
We build a clutch specially for the Norris Designs application and in the most extreme case this is a Quad Disc 7.25″ to hold the torque from their most powerful setup.
